Daily Breeze, Sunday, January 13, 2002:
"In 1987, one of the case's original investigators, Hermosa
Beach Detective Paul Bynum, committed suicide. Just three
years after the Klaas case he was assigned to one of the
most grisly cases in South Bay history — Lawrence Bittaker
and Roy Norris, who tortured and murdered five teen-age
girls. Bittaker remains on death row.
"Friends said Bynum never recovered from listening to
Bittaker and Norris' tape recording of their torturing a 16-
year-old to death."
The prosecutor overseeing the State's case during appeal
was given a copy of the audio tape. He was instructed never
to listen to it.
